For most people the xTool S1 (40W diode) is the best laser engraver in 2026: it is fully enclosed and Class-1 safe, cuts hardwood, and engraves tumblers, slate, and leather at around $1,899. If you need to cut clear acrylic or run production volume, step up to a CO2 machine like the xTool P2 (55W, ~$4,499) or the OMTech Pronto 50 (~$3,999). On a tight budget, a 10–20W diode from Ortur or xTool starts around $200–$500.
Should I buy a diode, CO2, or fiber laser?
Match the laser type to the material. A diode laser emits at ~450nm and engraves wood, leather, slate, and coated metal cheaply, but it physically cannot cut clear acrylic — the beam passes straight through. A CO2 laser emits infrared at 10,600nm, which acrylic absorbs, so it cuts clear and cast acrylic, thick wood, and leather far faster. A fiber laser at 1064nm is the only type that marks bare metal (stainless, aluminum, brass) deeply without a marking spray.
How much does a good laser engraver cost?
Budget diode machines run $200–$500, enclosed diodes like the xTool S1 land at $1,200–$2,000, value CO2 machines run $2,500–$4,000, and premium CO2 like the Glowforge Pro reaches ~$6,999. Expect to add about $60–$120 for LightBurn software, plus ventilation or a fume extractor, which is not optional on any machine that cuts.
Can a laser engraver cut acrylic?
A CO2 laser can; a diode laser mostly cannot. Clear and most cast acrylic is transparent to a diode laser's ~450nm blue light, so the beam passes through without cutting — diodes only cut dark or specially-coated acrylic. A 55W CO2 laser cuts roughly 18mm acrylic in a single pass with a flame-polished edge (per xTool and OMTech cutting specs). If acrylic is central to what you make, buy CO2.
Do I need laser goggles and ventilation?
Yes to both, unless your machine is a fully enclosed Class-1 unit. Goggles must be matched to your laser's wavelength (roughly 450nm diode, 1064nm fiber, 10,600nm CO2) with a stated optical density for that specific wavelength — a generic pair is not protection. Every laser that cuts produces fumes and needs ducting outdoors or a filtering fume extractor; engraving PVC or vinyl releases chlorine gas and should never be done at all.
